How Invisalign treatment works, from consultation to retainers

The visible trays are one part of a larger process that includes clinical assessment, digital planning, tooth movement, monitoring and retention.

1. Consultation and assessment

The provider reviews your goals and evaluates whether clear aligner treatment is appropriate. Dental health, bite relationships and the condition of the teeth and gums may affect the plan.

Clinical noteOnline information can help you prepare questions, but only a licensed dentist or orthodontist who has examined you can determine whether a treatment approach is appropriate.

2. Digital records and planning

A digital scan or other records are used to create a 3D representation of the teeth. The treating clinician reviews and adjusts the treatment plan rather than relying on software alone.

3. Wearing the aligners

Custom aligners are worn in sequence according to the provider’s instructions. Each stage is intended to contribute to the planned tooth movements.

4. Monitoring and adjustment

The clinic checks fit and progress. If movement is not tracking or the treatment goals need adjustment, the provider may change instructions, use auxiliaries or order refinement aligners.

5. Retention

Once active movement is complete, retainers are used to help maintain the outcome. Long-term retention is a normal part of orthodontic care.

Questions to take to a consultation

  • What is the diagnosis you are treating, not just the cosmetic concern?
  • Who will design and monitor my treatment plan?
  • What happens if the teeth do not track as expected?
  • Are refinements and retainers included in the fee?
  • What alternatives should I understand before deciding?
