What attachments do
Attachments are small shapes bonded to selected teeth. They give the aligner additional surfaces to push or pull against so the treatment can create certain controlled movements. Not every patient needs the same number or shape of attachments.
Will attachments be visible?
Attachments are generally tooth coloured, but they can still be noticeable at conversational distance depending on their position, the lighting and the natural shade of the teeth.
- Ask which teeth are expected to receive attachments.
- Ask whether attachments are planned from the beginning or may be added later.
What is IPR?
Interproximal reduction, often shortened to IPR, is the controlled removal of a very small amount of enamel between selected teeth when clinically appropriate. It may be used to create space or improve tooth relationships. Your provider should explain why it is recommended in your specific plan.
Other auxiliaries
Some cases may also use elastics or other features. The need for these tools is case specific and is one reason a detailed consultation is more useful than judging treatment only by photos of clear trays.
